Housing campaign kicks off.

ACORN Reading's housing campaign is off to a flying start! After a great meeting on Tuesday night with some passionate members who have experienced first hand some of the issues with letting agents in the Reading area we’ve come up with some ideas, but we need to hear from more people!

We’ll be raising the ideas we have at our big launch meeting in January, but in the meantime we’re preparing and researching the issues. We want to compile a worst to best list of letting agencies in town. We’ve already heard lots of stories but we want more to make sure we’re getting an accurate picture. We’ll be surveying as many people as we can over Reading about their experiences as a renter.

Once we’ve a good picture of which agencies are doing what we’ll start campaigning for better standards. We’ll be publishing our rankings and getting people to add to them, putting out your stories, and giving out information on renters rights and what practices are allowed and not allowed. We’re hoping that at the launch meeting people will be keen to work on housing and vote for some actions. Our members had some creative ideas about how to reward good practice, and publicly shame bad practice if agents don’t want to change, unfortunately we are too late in the year now to plan dressing up as father Christmas and delivering coal to bad agents and presents to good ones!

Get in touch (for the moment using facebook, twitter, or email us using reading@acorncommunities.org.uk) with your stories, and ideas on improving letting practice in Reading!
