"It was such a positive day. I was really pleased that most of the people we spoke to had heard of ACORN and gave us positive feedback about the campaign. We've achieved such a great deal in the last 4 months, the signing event was testament to that and all signs seem to point to the group growing and growing". Steph, ACORN Newcastle Member.
On Saturday 23rd April, ACORN Newcastle members organised an action to celebrate our historic win in our campaign for better housing standards in the private rented sector.
Saturday’s event was a celebration of the first letting agents, Wright Residential, Heaton Property and Uni-Lettings, to sign up to our Ethical Lettings Charter, guaranteeing hundreds of tenants fair treatment and accountability. These letting agents have set themselves apart from the rest in demonstrating their commitment to offer best practice in the sector and fair and decent homes to rent. We also visited other letting agents to publicise the Charter. Several of these have agreed to meet with us to discuss signing up to it.

We launched our campaign in December 2015 and already, in just 4 months, we are showing that when the community works together, change can happen!
Saturday’s action was a follow up to an event we organised on 3rd March, which saw 100 attendees share their experiences renting houses in Newcastle and three letting agents commit to signing the Ethical Lettings Charter.
On the day, we dressed in red and, carrying balloons and ACORN flags, spoke to members of the public to build support and publicise the campaign!
“The support from passersby was especially reassuring and gives us confidence that we're acting on the issues important to the people of Heaton." Ross ACORN Newcastle member.
