ACORN Newham is two weeks old, and already acting on the housing crisis.
Seventy people packed out a Forest Gate hall a fortnight ago to back our new organisation that's owned by the people, and whose mission is to work for the people. Our members and those keen to join us so we can tip the balance of power in favour of the people shared their housing horror stories. So we agreed to act. We've wasted no time.
ACORN has already in a short space of time supported two of our members facing unfair evictions. Our organising team came with member Atta Rehman whose landlord was telling him to leave - despite having NO power to do so. Together, we presented a united front at first the lettings agent and then Newham Council (pictured, right). We also took action for a second member and asked for a meeting with a second Forest Gate landlord - who since backed down in trying to unfairly force out his tenant.
Fresh from these early wins, ACORN Newham members this week come together to agree the changes we'll seek to bring about over the next months and years. Alone, we are powerless in the face of the Newham housing crisis.
Together, we cannot be ignored - and we can, and will win a better deal for our members.
