There’s just under a month to go to #RentersRising. Just under a month before renters and their supporters in Reading come together to set up the #RentersUnion, to defend our rights and make them stronger, and to win secure, decent and affordable homes for all.
So far 14 people have said they’ll come. That’s ok, it’s a good start, but it’s not enough.
The more people who come, the stronger the union will be. We all know that there’s strength in numbers, but just think about that. If you on your own approach a letting agent complaining about a repair not being made, they can ignore you or fob you off. If there’s 100 people outside their shop they’re going to make sure things are sorted out really quickly. If there’s 100,000 people, we can put pressure on the government to make sure things like this can’t happen in the first place. This is the sort of organisation we’re building, and we need your help.
ACORN members in Reading have been busy so far. Last Wedneday, we held a small meeting in Newtown. Building the groundwork for the full scale #RentersRising event, 9 people came together and discussed some of the issues facing renters at the moment. There are many. Everyone at that meeting agreed that an organisation to unite and support tenants is needed.
Last Saturday, we also held a stall in the centre of town. 5 people spent a couple of hours on Broad Street, talking to people about their experiences of renting in town. Again, when talking about an organisation that can improve the situation for renters, the majority of people thought it was a good idea.
So, what can I do?
There are a number of things anyone and everyone can do. We’re asking people to pledge to do at least one of the following things:
- Invite your friends
- Spreading the word on social media
- Volunteering to help on the day
- Joining other members when we hold stalls and talk to members of the public.
- Making and appearing in short videos about renting in Reading, and why we need a #RentersUnion.
Take action now!
Immediate action is what ACORN are all about. So, if you’re on facebook, share the event now. The event page is here.
Also, one thing anyone can do is help keep the organisation independent by sponsoring our organisers. We’re aiming for our organisers to be funded entirely by the members, which means we can make sure the only people who can say what we do is our members. We ask people to chip in whatever money they can each month, most people are giving about £8 p/month.
We know that renters pay the most to live in the worst conditions with the least security. Well, not for long.
