To: Jason Eustice (Newham’s Children's Centre Commissioner), Justin Elder (Head of Service for Newham’s Early Start) and Kemi Balogun (Director of Alphabet Nursery)
Provide a written guarantee to all parents of children at Alphabet Nursery (Shrewsbury Road) ensuring that the centre will remain open until the end of the 2016 academic year, and each child at Shrewsbury Road will be guaranteed their first choice of a either place at the new Early Start centre or at the expanded Alphabet Nursery - Canberra Road centre.
Why this is important: The Shrewsbury Road Alphabet Nursery has been part of the local community, and a lifeline for local parents, for more than a decade. But last week, without any prior warning or consultation, parents were shocked to be told that the centre was closing in April, leaving the prospect of 60 local children without a nursery place half way through the school year.
Since then, Newham Council and Alphabet Nursery seem to have changed their original plans after parents spoke-out. But with poor communication from the start, it is not clear what is has been guaranteed to parents. Now parents want to put the record straight, and are demanding that the Council and the Nursery committ to protecting the welfare of every child involved.
