World domination here we come!
Well ok maybe not... BUT just 18 months after we started organising for community power in Easton, Bristol, ACORN (The Association of Community Organisations for Reform, Now!) are out to raise the voice of residents around the Country, starting in Brixton and now Forest Gate in East London.
ACORN Organisers Eva, Jonny and Lee say:
"Problems with private landlords, kerb-crawling, and dumped rubbish are being raised. People are also saying that Forest Gate's landlords, #Newham’s street cleaning bosses and the Metropolitan Police all need to do a better job"
In the last few weeks over 100 people have stood up to be involved and some especially passionate residents have stepped forward to join the initial "Organising Team".
"It was standing room only in our second Organising Team meeting last night. There was passion and energy to force the powerful to change things on welfare sanctions, parking charges, affordable homes, and school places. If people stand up for each other, we're stronger. Now let's stay together, and win!"
Over the next few weeks, more residents voices will be included and the Organising Team will choose priority issues for the new ACORN group to tackle. Then in early October, all the residents of the area will be invited to a founding meeting, voting for the first local issue to take action on.
ACORN Organisers have also recently been out and about talking to residents in the Heaton area of Newcastle and Balsall Heath area of Birmingham, while trainee Organisers from Reading are just about to get started.
If you or someone you know live in Forest Gate, you can fill in our residents survey HERE, or visit the office at Durning Hall, Earlham Grove, London E7 9AB to find out whats happening.
Let's get together!
