"LEARN TO LISTEN, CONNECT AND INSPIRE YOUR COMMUNITY
TO ACT TOGETHER FOR CHANGE"
What does the course involve?
ACORN Newcastle is running a weekend of training on the fundamentals of community organising in June. After that, for those who would like to, you will have the opportunity to get involved in ACORN and put into practice what you have learnt, getting support from fellow participants, ACORN members and organisers.
If you can't make the weekend but like the sound of what we do, get in touch and we should be able work something out.
What does the two day training weekend cover?
The aim of the two-day training weekend is to cover the fundamentals of community organising. The activities will be a mix of discussion, group exercises and practical demonstrations so you learn the skills and knowledge to be effective community organisers. We will look at why we organise and how we organise. In addition, we will think about ways in which we can get more power and rights for communities.
Why we organise
We will learn about the ideas and practice of community organising, including its history and values. Much of this will be about power: the central concept at the heart of organising.
How we organise
We will learn the practical aspects of community organising and develop skills in using organising techniques and tools. This includes:
- Listening to people and 1-2-1s;
- Campaign planning and supporting action;
- Telling persuasive stories.
Putting it into practice
If you are inspired by the training, you will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in what you have learnt by getting involved with ACORN, a local grassroots organisation that uses community organising. This will deepen your learning and understanding. We will find out what aspects of the training most interested you and you can join small teams of people putting it into practice.
Who is it for and what are the commitments?
The training is for anyone who is passionate, motivated and enthusiastic about making communities stronger and the world a fairer place.
The commitment is to attend two days of training. Can't make it? Get in touch anyway and we'll figure something out.
Places are limited, so to secure your place, please RSVP. One of the ACORN team will then be in touch to talk to you about the training and make sure it is right for you before confirming your place.
