We are building a movement of communities, organised and united for social change.
Community organising means building the leadership, capacity and skills of our communities to tackle the vested interests of business elites, and hold decision-makers to account. It means democracy in action. ACORN supports our members to improve our neighourhoods, influence employers, landlords, businesses and authorities, run projects and services to help each other, and fight for economic and social change. Find out how we work here.
ACORN (the Association of Community Organisations for Reform Now) has been building the power of communities to win social change for 45 years. Launched by single-mums and benefit claimants in 1970's Arkansas (USA), ACORN today involves 130, 000+ members on 4 continents and has transferred billions of dollars from rich to poor. Check out some of our historic achievements.
In the UK, times are tough and inequality is rising. Millions of us are struggling with low (or no) incomes, the high cost of living, poor housing, cuts to services, debts, run-down neighbourhoods and financial insecurity.
ACORN UK was founded in May 2014 by 100 residents of Easton, Bristol vowing to fight locally to end evictions, rip-off tenancy fees, and unhealthy housing. Since then they've tackled slum-landlords, won tens of thousands of pounds in repairs and rent reductions, and moved politicians, the City Council, landlords, letting agents, charities and student organisations to back a campaign for Ethical Lettings.
Now organising across Bristol, as well as in London, Birmingham and Newcastle, our members have won better housing and safer streets. Help write the next chapter. Sign up for updates below.
