Bristol is often called one of the best places to live in the UK. That may be true for some but the fact is that as our real average income has been cut by 13% since 2008, many people here are struggling to make ends meet and this has a destructive effect on our communities.
A big reason for this are the low wages that are paid to so many of us across the city. Have you heard about the Living Wage? This is the amount of money that an individual needs to earn to cover the basic costs of living. The current legal minimum wage is £6.31 per hour, but a living wage is calculated as £7.45 per hour. An extra pound or so an hour would go a long way!
More than 8,000 workers in Bristol are earning less than the Living Wage – that’s nearly 20% of the workforce!
We think that Bristolians deserve to earn enough to support a decent standard of living and if you agree then we’d love to have you come and get involved and help us run a campaign to to get a fairer deal for employees across the city.
